When the Rainbow Goddess Wept is the first novel of Cecilia Manguerra Brainard, first published by Dutton (1994) and currently published by the University of Michigan Press. An earlier version of this novel was published by New Day Publishers as Song of Yvonne.
The novel is a coming of age story of a young girl named Yvonne Macaraig during World War II in the Philippines. The author says the novel was inspired by her own family's experiences during the war. Her father, who was a civil engineer, had to flee with his family to Mindanao where he was part of the guerrilla movement. It was in Mindanao where the author's mother had a stillborn son. All these experiences and more were repeated as stories in the Manguerra household, and the author wove these into this epic novel that reveals the strength of the Filipino spirit under duress.
