"When the Lights Go Out" was the second single released from Five's debut album 5ive in early/mid 1998.

"When The Lights Go Out" was co-written by Eliot Kennedy, Tim Lever, Mike Percy, (both from the band Dead or Alive), J. McClaughlin and 5ive themselves and it was co-produced by Eliot Kennedy, Tim Lever and Mike Percy. "When The Lights Go Out" is the band's biggest hit to date, and their first (and last) top ten hit in the U.S. An alternate version of the song, which Abs' rap replaces J's rap was made especially for the US release; thus being two separate videos for each version.

Five's biggest hit to date internationally, "When The Lights Go Out" is considered somewhat to be their debut single in most countries (except in the UK), peaking at number 2 in Australia and just entering the Top 10 in the US. The song also spent a massive 6 months in the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
