When Shadows Dream is a book series of speculative short stories by American author, Tom Terry. The first volume, When Shadows Dream: Twilight, was published in 2005.
[edit] Mixed genre and style
Terry's first published work of short stories combines an unusual mix of science fiction and light fantasy presented in a Christian values genre. Unlike most Christian fiction which presents Christianity overtly in story lines, When Shadows Dream uses allegory and alternate realities to present values concepts common among Evangelical Christianity.
Terry's writing is sometimes critical of charismatic Christianity in the form of the Word of Faith movement, as expressed in the opening story of the series, "By Faith," which tells the story of a middle-aged man seeking personal significance by trying to perform a miracle.
The stories presented in the collection often take sharp, disturbing turns not normally found in modern religious fiction. "Ordinary" tells the story of a missionary who leaves a man to be eaten by a lion. "Canvas and Flesh" is a brutal tale of abuse suffered in an Arabic prison. "Murder One," set in an alternate reality, takes place in corporate offices where one may order a murder by phone as easily as calling for a pizza.
Terry often sets his short stories among familiar surroundings in cities and countries where he has lived, creating alternate realities around usually nondescript locations. Stories in volume one are set in Tucson, Arizona, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Istanbul, Turkey, and Orlando, Florida.
The second book in the series, When Shadows Dream: Midnight, is slated for a 2007 release.
