Wheatstone Bridge

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wheatstone Bridge was a progressive rock band from Hendersonville, North Carolina. Usually consisting of the "power trio" approach since its' inception in 1995 by David Wilson(guitars and vocals), it later expanded to include some MIDI work.

The project began in 1995 with Wilson and Andy Balla, former drummer for Danger City, getting together to share some progressive ideas. The project would remain a two-piece until bassist John Taylor, formerly of Saint John, would answer an ad placed by Wilson. This lineup would continue until 1998 when Taylor moved to Texas and Balla decided to pursue other musical interests(see Senatobia).

Taylor and Wilson reunited and resurrected the project briefly in 1998, along with Shawna Solito and Jim "Moose" Solito under the name SHIFT briefly, marking the only time when a version of WB contained more than three elements. This incarnation was short-lived, given the distance between musicians, and WB was once again shelved.

Wilson and Taylor reunited once again in 2003, this time with new drummer Ernie Planck, as Wheatstone Bridge. This would mark WB's foray into MIDI samples and the addition of a light show. Wheatstone Bridge would go on to play more than 300 shows in a two-year period, including being featured at the Rogue Independent Music Festival in 2004.

Wheatstone Bridge's music was marked by heavy, complex arrangements, a bewildering array of different and difficult time signatures, and a general feeling of schizophrenia throughout...leading the band to coin a new phrase called "shock and awe prog" to describe their overall sound. One other phrase used to describe their sound was "intercontinental ballistic music".

Circumstances forced yet another Wilson/Taylor split in 2005. After the split, Wheatstone Bridge continued to perform as a two piece, until adding bassist Kendrick Carpenter in the fall of 2005. This version of Wheatstone Bridge continued writing and performing until the summer of 2006. Afterwords, 2006 would see a brief reunion of Wilson, Planck, and Taylor as alter ego band Boiled Foreskin, which was ultimately short-lived.

2007 will (hopefully) see the recording of the entire Wheatstone Bridge catalog. This massive undertaking will include the two newest epics titled Atramental Divide and Illumimental Divide, as well as a yet untitled instrumental. The search for a qualified bassist has not yet begun.

David Wilson and Ernie Planck, with the addition of Jack Knife and Andy Christ, still play as Boiled Foreskin, and are currently completing a long awaited album. John Taylor plays in alternative rock band Brandy's Hand, and runs a DIY record label called Cassiopeia Records. He has also released one solo album of bass material and is forming another instrumental prog metal project.
