Wheatfield, Oxfordshire
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wheatfield was a settlement in southern Oxfordshire; all that remains today is the crenellated St. Andrews Church and the old stables. The Rudge family bought the land in 1727 and updated the church, but fire destroyed the manor house in 1814 leaving only the stables. These have since been converted into modern dwellings. The church is still in use, but only in the summer since it has no electricity.
Wheatfield Manor and Wheatfield Park was also held by the Spencer-Churchills. The estate saw a number of pioneering migrants in 1849 going to the Port Phillip Colony near Melbourne before the 1850s gold rush, such as the Treadwell girls, Henry Burchill and James, William and Ann Burrows who were assigned to Captain John Hepburn at Smeaton, Victoria, Australia.
