"What I've Been Looking For" is a song from the Disney Channel Original Movie, High School Musical. It also appears on the soundtrack by the same name. It is sung by Ashley Tisdale and Lucas Grabeel.
[edit] Movie Relation
"What I've Been Looking For" is the audition song for East High's upcoming winter musical "Twinkle Towne". After a string of poor auditions by others, Ryan and Sharpay Evans perform an upbeat version of the song, written by the school's composer Kelsi Nielson. It does not have any thematic significance to the plot, but this duet is written in a satirical Broadway feel to characterize Ryan and Sharpay as pompous and overconfident.
"What I've Been Looking For (Reprise)" is performed by Troy and Gabriella after Ms. Darbus ends the auditions. They perform the song as intended by composer Kelsi Nielsen--a slow love duet--and upon overhearing the performance, Ms. Darbus grants Troy and Gabriella a callback for the lead roles audition. Like "Start of Something New," this song signifies the new relationship between Troy and Gabriella and the sense of purpose it gives.
[edit] Chart performance
What I've Been Looking For was another success from the film, peaking at #6 on the iTunes Top 100. It was the first song sung by Ashley Tisdale and Lucas Grabeel from the soundtrack to make the Top Ten of iTunes. The song was also another hit from the soundtrack, debuting at #35 on the Billboard Hot 100, probably because of strong downloads and no airplay, which has been a trend with the other songs from the soundtrack, including Breaking Free which has peaked at #4 on the Billboard Charts.

[edit] Reprise version
The reprise version, also from High School Musical, was sung by Zac Efron and Vanessa Anne Hudgens. But while also a hit from the film, it was not as successful as the original version, with a peak thus far at #19 on the iTunes Chart. It is the first High School Musical number sung by Andrew Seeley and Vanessa Anne Hudgens as a duet to not make the Top Ten of iTunes (compared to singles Breaking Free and Start of Something New from the same soundtrack). The song debuted at #67 on the Billboard Hot 100, due to strong downloads, and no airplay. The song, once again, was not as successful compared to its original version which debuted and peaked in the Top 40.
During Disney Channel's Hispanic Heritage month the Mexican band Belanova made a version of this song in Spanish, named "Eres tu".
