WFXI, channel 8 is the Fox affiliate serving the Greenville/Washington/New Bern television market in northeastern North Carolina. The station is licensed to Morehead City, and its transmitter is located in Stacy, North Carolina. It operates a full-time satellite, WYDO, on channel 14 in Greenville. WYDO's transmitter is located in Ayden, North Carolina. The station's main studio is in Morehead City, and it operates a sales office in Greenville.
WFXI debuted on April 20, 1988 as an independent station, making it the first VHF station in the state not affiliated with the "Big Three" networks. It was also the first full-powered non-network station in eastern North Carolina.
WFXI must conform its signal to protect WRIC-TV in Richmond, so its signal only reaches New Bern, Jacksonville and the southern and eastern portions of the market. As a condition of getting the Fox affiliation for the market, it had to sign on WYDO to cover the rest of the market. WYDO debuted on October 2, 1989.
WFXI/WYDO's on-air name is "Fox 8 Fox 14". WFXI's digital signal is broadcast on UHF channel 24, while WYDO's digital signal is broadcast on UHF channel 21.
WNCT-TV produces a 10pm newscast for the station.
Currently, WFXI/WYDO does not offer any high-definition broadcasts.
[edit] MyNetworkTV
On April 18, it was announced that WFXI/WYDO's digital subchannel DT2 would affiliate with the new MyNetworkTV Television Network. [1] However, MNT later changed its mind and on August 11 moved its affiliation to WEPX/WPXU, the area's "i" network stations. [2]
