WFQR and WFRQ (93.5 and 101.1 Frank FM) are a pair of FM radio stations licensed to Harwich Port and Mashpee, Massachusetts respectively. They serve the Cape Cod market. They broadcast on 93.5 MHz and 101.1 MHz respectively with a variety hits format known as Frank FM, which is similar to the "Jack FM" format.

[edit] Station History

WFXR (93.5) went on the air on May 18, 1989, with a satellite delivered soft rock format. In the fall of 1991, the owners of WFXR purchased WFAL (101.1). This deal was inked 2 days after a historic rules change by the Federal Communication Commission. The new rules allowed one entity to own two FM stations in the same market. This deal was the second in the nation to win FCC approval. WFXR owners then began simulcasting the soft rock format on WFAL. WFAL also went on the air in the late 1980s, under the ownership of Schooner Broadcasting, with principals Linda Baines and Brenda Westgate. The stations were sold to Omni Broadcasting (WCOD) in 1993 and the formats changed to country as both were heavy competitors with WCOD. Omni was sold to Paul Levesque and the failure of country music to attract an audience required another format change.

WFXR had become WUNX, and became an affiliate of the "Underground Network", a network of rock stations that included WDRE in Philadelphia and WLIR on Long Island. Locally, WUNX continued to simulcast WFAL, which by this time had been given new call letters: WUNZ.

WUNX and WUNZ were sold to Ernie Boch's Boch Broadcasting in 1995, and the stations soon took different paths. WUNX became WJCO, and adopted a satellite-delivered adult contemporary format as "Coast 93.5". WJCO didn't last long; in 1998, the station stunted for a week with Chumbawumba's hit "Tubthumping" before relaunching as satellite-delivered CHR-formatted "Star 93.5" WYST. The hit music lasted until late-1999, when the station again changed format to a satellite-delivered oldies format as "Oldies 93.5".

WUNX became WWKJ, and adopted a satellite-delivered classic rock format as "KJ-101".

In 2001, Boch brought in a new staff to run the Cape Cod stations. The new staff immediately changed the formats of WYST and WWKJ by swapping them. WYST became known as classic rock "The Vault" WDVT, while WWKJ became "The Wave" WTWV. Before long, "The Vault" was closed and WDVT reverted to a simulcast of "The Wave".

In 2005, Boch Broadcasting was acquired by Qantum Communications. Qantum was required to sell off three of the combined company's stations; as the simulcast of WTWV and WDVT was not only low-rated but also qualified as two stations, "The Wave" and WPXC were sold to Nassau Broadcasting.

On March 22, 2006 Nassau replaced the oldies format of "The Wave". Unlike the "Frank FM" classic hits stations in Portland, Maine and southern New Hampshire, WTWV and WDVT flipped to the variety hits format as "93.5 and 101.1 Frank FM". On March 28, WDVT and WTWV became WFQR and WFRQ.

[edit] Trivia

WTWV was also the original callsign of WTVA 9, an NBC affiliate television station based in Tupelo, Mississippi.
