[edit] History

WFNZ used to broadcast Imus in the Morning in 1998, but dropped the format due to low ratings.

WFNZ was known as WAYS (AM) from 1941 to 1984. For much of the 1970's, it was Charlotte's top-rated Top 40 station. In 1984, it became WROQ (AM) and simulcast its then-FM sister station (now WNKS). [[1]] It was known as WRFX-AM during the early 1990's, when it was co-owned with (but did not simulcast) WRFX-FM. It was also briefly known as WAES (a phonetic match for its original call letters, which were no longer available). It adopted the WFNZ call letters and all-sports format in 1995.

WFNA went on the air in 2003, after the FCC expanded the AM radio band. It replaced CBS-owned gospel station WGIV (1600 AM), which left the air. (The WGIV call letters are now on a different station in the Charlotte area, under different ownership.)

The two stations simulcast for part of the broadcast day and have separate schedules for part of the day.
