WFME is a radio station on 94.7 MHz FM licensed to Newark, New Jersey that serves the New York City metropolitan area playing traditional Christian music along with ultra conservative fundamentalist teaching and preaching. It is owned by Family Stations Incorporated aka Family Radio. This is a non-commercial and non-profit operation headed by Harold Camping. The station also sells no airtime. The few outside ministries that air on Family Radio are not charged to be on the air. The station has been owned by Family Stations since 1966.

[edit] History

94.7 FM signed on in 1947 as WAAT-FM. In 1958 it became WNTA-FM and was co-owned with 13 WNTA-TV (now WNET) and AM 970 WNTA (now WWDJ). WNTA-FM had diversified programming such as jazz, classical music, and easy listening music. After its owner sold Channel 13 and AM 970, 94.7 became WJRZ-FM in 1962. They began selling some airtime to Family Radio beginning in 1964. In 1965, the station was renamed WFME and in 1966 Family Stations bought 94.7 FM and began airing religious programming 24/7.

Some say WFME stands for "Family Media Enterprises", while others say it stands for "Family Means Everything", and still others say it stands for "Faith Means Everything." Another theory is that it stands for FM-Emmanuel, named after Lazarus Emmanuel, one of the senior managers of WJRZ. Since being owned Family Stations, WFME has not sold any airtime. They have never accepted advertising either. Except for some public affairs programs a couple hours a week, local weather and traffic reports from Shadow Traffic, WFME's programming originates from Family Radio in Oakland, California with their studios, offices and transmitter located in West Orange, New Jersey.
