The cemetery was established in 1884 on Atlanta's west side when Oakland Cemetery was mostly filled out. Over 582 acres were purchased by a private corporation, headed by E. P. McBurney. Tombs here include L.P. Grant, the founders furniture retailers Haverty's & Rhodes, the entire Adair clan, Joel Chandler Harris, and William Berry Hartsfield. [2]
