Westlake Chaparrals
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Westlake Chaparrals represent the various athletic teams of Westlake High School in Austin, Texas. The two most well known and most successful are the Westlake football and volleyball teams.
[edit] Football
The Westlake Football Team has experienced much success since 1990. The Westlake Football Team has qualified for the playoffs in every season since 1988. The Current Head Coach and Athletic Director is Derek Long. He is assisted by a coaching staff led by Offensive Coordinator Sul Ross and Defensive Coordinator Lane Grigg. Through December 24, 2006, Coach Long's record at Westlake stands at 38 wins and 13 losses including an 8-4 mark in the playoffs.
[edit] Football coaches
Before Coach Long's promotion to Head Coach, Westlake was coached by Ron Schroeder, the winningest coach in Westlake history. In 16 seasons, Schroeder compiled a record of 187 wins, 27 losses, and 3 ties, including a 41-13-2 mark in the playoffs and winning the 1996 State Championship. After missing the playoffs in his first season, Coach Schoreder led the Chaps to 15 consecutive playoff appearances before retiring, a streak that has since been extended to 19 under Coach Long. The Westlake coaches are known for their extremely long tenures within the program, and generally promote coaches within the program rather than hire outside the district. Coach Schroeder was originally an Offensive Coordinator under Ebbie Neptune before being promoted to Head Coach in 1987. Coach Long was also originally a defensive assistant coach under Coach Neptune, then a Defensive Coordinator under Coach Schroeder before succeeding Schroeder in 2003.
Westlake Football has had 6 Head Coaches in its 38 seasons. The Coaches are:
Kenneth Dabbs (1969-1972) - Record: 24-15
Robert Wallace (1973-1977) - Record: 24-24-2
Bobby Etheredge (1978-1981) - First Coach to Lead Westlake to the Playoffs. Record: 21-13-1
Ebbie Neptune (1982-1986) - First Coach to Win in the Playoffs and Win a Regional Championship (1985). Record: 39-17-1
Ron Schroeder (1987-2002) - First Coach to Win a State Championship. Record: 187-27-3
Derek Long (2003 - Current) - Incumbent Head Coach. Record: 38-13 (through December 24, 2006)
[edit] Home field advantage
The Chaps play their home games at Westlake Chaparral Stadium at Ebbie Neptune Field, more commonly known as Chaparral Stadium. The Chaps have boasted one of the biggest home field advantages in the state of Texas. Since 1990, The Chaps have been defeated only twice at home and one of the losses was in the playoffs. Converse Judson walked away victorious in 1997 and Pflugerville defeated the Chaps at Chaparral Stadium in a 2004 playoff game.
[edit] Rivalries
Westlake's main rival are the Austin Maroons, Westwood Warriors, and the Bowie Bulldogs. Westlake also maintains a rivalry of much smaller magnitude with the Crockett Cougars. Between the above four opponents, Westlake has lost just four times.

[edit] Streaks
[edit] Scoring streak
Ever since suffering a 10-0 Shutout Loss to Lockhart in the 1978 Season, the Chaparrals have not lost in a shutout since, a span of 357 games through the 2006 season. This streak is still active today. The Chaps have also recorded 59 Shutout Victories during the streak. To get a sense of how long the streak has been, Jimmy Carter was President in 1978, the Iran Hostage Crisis was still a few years away, Warren Burger was still the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Berlin Wall was standing, and the Soviet Union was still going strong.
[edit] The 71 game winning streak
From 1990 through 2003, the Chaparrals won a national record 71 District Games, 17 by shutout, and capturing 12 consecutive District Titles along the way. The streak ended in 2003 when the Chaparrals were defeated at Hays 19-21.

[edit] Volleyball
The Westlake Volleyball team has experienced tremendous success since current coach Al Bennett took over the program in the 1980's. Coach Bennett has led the team to the playoffs in each of his 19 seasons, 14 District Championships (1989, 1991-95, 1997, 1999-2004, and 2006), 6 Regional Championships (1991, 1993, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005), and 4 State Championships (1991, 1993, 2002, and 2004). The 2004 team was perhaps the greatest team Westlake ever fielded, with a roster loaded with 8 Division I recruits and 14 Seniors, the 2004 Lady Chaps finished 43-1 and were ranked #1 Nationally at one point in the season.
[edit] Noteworthy Stat
The last time that the Westlake Football Team did not qualify for the playoffs was the 1987 season, before any of the 2006 team's players were born. The 2006 playoff berth marked Westlake's 19th consecutive appearance in the UIL Playoffs.
The last time that the Westlake Volleyball Team did not participate in the playoffs was in the 1986 season, also before any of the current players on the 2006 team were born. Westlake Volleyball has appeared in the playoffs for 20 straight years.
The Chaps Football Team have recorded 76 Shutout Wins in their history and have only been shutout 13 times, none since 1978 and never in the playoffs.
Over the years, it has been progressively easier to qualify for the playoffs. Before the 1990 season, only the top two teams from each district advanced to the playoffs. Since 1990, the top three teams from each district advanced (this was for 5A only until 1994 when 4A adopted the three team playoff rule as well). From 1990-1993, Westlake was a 4A program, so it was not until Westlake's 5A return in 1994 did Westlake benefit from the new rule. In 2006, 5A added a fourth playoff team from each district.
