Westgate, Columbus, Ohio

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Westgate is a neighborhood to the immediate west of the Hilltop area of Columbus, located between West Broad Street and Sullivant Avenue. It was constructed on land formerly housing the Camp Chase Civil War base and Confederate Prison. After the Civil War, the land was purchased by Joseph Binns and his associates to be used to start a Mennonite Community. These plans failed to materialize, and the land was developed as a "streetcar suburb" in the 1930's. Features include Westgate Park and a small portion of the original Civil War base remaining as a Confederate Cemetery.

Westgate is near several other large Columbus neighborhoods, such as Riverbend, Cherry Creek, and Franklinton, and is in Precinct 19 of the Columbus Division of Police.

Although surrounded by "low income" neighborhoods, the well-built Westgate Homes have maintained their value. This neighborhood is similar to the Clintonville area of Columbus, but suffers from higher crime due to the surrounding ghettos. A recent influx of Hispanic Immigrants is changing the makeup of the traditionally black areas to the east and south and west of Westgate. Housing costs run from the the low $80,000s to $225,000.
