Westfield Bay City is a shopping centre located in Geelong, Victoria (Australia). It was formerly known as Bay City Plaza before being taken over by The Westfield Group in 2004. There is an ongoing proposal to extend the shopping centre with a flyover over Yarra Street, but this has met a largely negative response from the community. It was given approval on 21 June 2006[1] and it is believed that construction will commence early in 2007. Big W is a likely store to be placed on the Yarra Street section of Westfield Bay City.

The shopping centre, mostly the Target store and parking areas were once the former wool storage sheds servicing the busy Geelong port.

[edit] Redevelopment

The contentious and often controversial expansion of Westfield Bay City has been given the green light including the major sore point of a 'flyover' crossing Yarra Street. Construction of this extension is due to start in February 2007 and will continue for up to 18 months. This has already caused some major headaches with retailers in the centre, with the closing of approximately ⅓ of the lower floor of the centre and the top floor (containing the centre's food court) being closed during this construction. It will also cause pain for shoppers, as it will see the closure of the Coles supermarket in the centre (the only supermarket remaining in the city centre), one block of Yarra Street, parts of the existing shopping centre's car park, and the multi-storey car park on Malop Street during construction.
