Western Australian general election, 1996

Elections to Parliament of Western Australia were held on Saturday 14 December 1996. All seats in the Legislative Assembly and all of the four-year seats in the Legislative Council were up for election. The Liberal-National Coalition led by Richard Court defeated the Australian Labor Party.

[edit] Electoral system

The Western Australian Legislative Assembly consists of 57 members, elected in single-member electorates by preferential Instant-runoff voting.

The Western Australian Legislative Council consists of 34 members, elected for fixed four-year terms. Each member is elected using a proportional and preferential voting system using the single transferable vote method, and represents one of six multi-member regions. Two of the regions elect seven members, while four regions elect five.

In the Western Australian Legislative Assembly:

Independent candidates (those not affiliated to any party) won 6 seats.

[edit] Legislative Council results

Elections were held for all seats in the Western Australian Legislative Council:

  • the Australian Labor Party won 12 seats
  • the Liberal Party of Australia won 9 seats in their own right
  • the Greens WA won 3 seats
  • the Australian Democrats won 3 seats
  • the National and Liberals won 8 seats. The Liberal-National Party contested the Agricultural & South West Regions of Western Australia as a joint ticket. Five seats were held by the Liberals as a result, whilst the other three seats were held by the Nationals.
