Westall Road

Westall Road (Metro-route 49) or the Springvale Bypass is an arterial road in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia.
Starting at the intersection with Princes Highway(Alt 1) in Clayton, intersecting with Centre Rd, an overpass of the Dandenong Rail line and an intersection with Heatherton Rd, all with a speed limit of 80kmh. Westall Rd then becomes Westall Rd Extension taking on the shape of a freeway (part of the proposed Dingley Freeway), with a speed limit of 100kmh. It comes to an end at the intersection with Springvale Rd in Keysborough.
Historically, Westall Rd ran as a major road from just south of the Dandenong Rail line at Westall Station to Heatherton Rd, and as a minor road from the railway line to Centre Rd.
The extensions north to Princes Highway and south to Springvale Rd were designed to reduce traffic on the Springvale section of Springvale Rd. Springvale Rd, which has a 70kmh or 80kmh speed limit for most of its length, is reduced to 60kmh in this region due to strip shops, and is delayed further by the Springvale Station level crossing, and the particularly slow Springvale (Spaghetti) Junction. The upgrade of Westall Road has allowed north-south through traffic to avoid this area.
