West meadow beach

West Meadow Beach is a peninsular of park-land approximately 1.5 miles long located north-west of Stony Brook Village, New York. The long beach and nearby marshes and wetlands make the area home to a number of bird species; this makes the park a popular spot for wildlife photographers.
In 1996, Assemblyman Steve Englebright took measures to have 90 cottages built on the land in the 1920s and 1930s demolished, as part of a plan to preserve open spaces in the Assembly; a court ruling in 1979 had deemed the cottages had been built on public land. In December 2004, the remaining residents were evicted and the cottages were torn down, despite a 10,000 strong petition to save them. The cottages had recently been placed on the National Register of Historic Places but the state-mandated demolition orders took precedence.
