West Ryde, New South Wales

West Ryde is a suburb in the Lower North Shore of Sydney Australia. The suburb is home to the West Ryde railway station, a shopping and commercial area, and the Sydney Water Station that pumps water to most of Northern Sydney. In the past, West Ryde was a working-class suburb of Sydney and was also home to many factories (especially around the Meadowbank area).
Today the suburb is growing more affluent, however the shopping stretch along Victoria Road remains unsatisfactory in the eyes of many and in need of a major makeover. The Woolworths in Graf Avenue was demolished in 2005 and replaced by a medium sized shopping centre. This shopping center, with Woolworths as the "anchor tenant" also contains Ryde library which has been moved from across the road. The centre itself has been rather high tech and attractive and has diverted several people from the ageing Top Ryde Shopping Centre, which is due to be redeveloped in 2006. The factories of the past are slowly succumbing to demolition, and the construction of million-dollar waterfront apartments with views of Sydney Harbour and Sydney Olympic Park is taking place.
West Ryde is the western-most suburb of Lower Northern Sydney and the City of Ryde. It borders parts of the City of Parramatta in its west, Eastwood (also part of the City of Ryde) and Denistone in its north, and the Parramatta River in its south. The suburbs of Meadowbank and Melrose Park share the 2114 postcode with West Ryde.
