West Haddon

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

West Haddon is a village in the Daventry district of the county of Northamptonshire in England. Then A428 runs through the middle of the village, but a bypass was completed in December 2005 and officially opened on Tuesday 13th December 2005. The bypass runs around the North edge of the village, connecting the Crick and Northampton exits of the A428. The village has two churches: a Church of England church called All Saints, and a baptist church.

[edit] Internet

In October 2003, a group of technology experts from the village and the neighbouring village of Winwick grouped together to provide wireless internet for both villages, as British Telecom refused to upgrade the West Haddon exchange (which serves both villages) to support broadband internet. A non-profit company called "West Haddon & Winwick Community Broadband, Ltd." was formed, and hardware installed in key locations around the two villages. The system ran successfully until October 2004 when it was decommissioned in favour of the newly-enabled BT broadband. A number of initiatives were tried on the system, including a community FTP server and a community intranet website. The system was featured in local newspapers, and was one of only a few such systems to be implemented in England.

[edit] Sport

The village has many provisions for sport, with two large playing fields at the North end of the village, a small children's play area, a tennis court, a petanque area, a cricket pitch with pavilion and car park, and links to numerous countryside paths, such as the Jurassic Way. In the middle of the village there is a bowls lawn. West Haddon has many active sports clubs, such as the tennis club, several youth football teams, a cricket team, a bowls club and a petanque club.

[edit] School

The village's primary school is a Church of England school, and its full name is "West Haddon Endowed Church of England primary school". The current headteacher (December 2005) is Mrs. Jane Windsor. The school has a capacity for just over 100 pupils, which are drawn from West Haddon and a few surrounding villages.
