West-Veluws
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
West-Veluws (also: Noord-Veluws or Noordwest-Veluws) is a West Low Saxon dialect from the Dutch province of Gelderland. This dialect is spoken in different villages on the Veluwe and some villages in Utrecht.
Veluws is usually spoken by elderly people and sometimes younger people but already with a more Dutch influence in their language. Veluws is a commonly accepted Dutch dialect because most people can understand it reasonably well. A 'dictionary' (more like a theme book which gives the definition of various dialect words) about Veluws (North and East) has been published called 'Veluwe - Het huis', the whole project is expected to be put on internet as well, a date is yet unknown.
Veluws is a variety which lies between Dutch and Low German but is viewed as Low Saxon. Words like: look (onion), zund (shame), laand (land), hen (have), bin (are), waarken (work), zeunig (crib), schik (fun), vretten (food), tied (time) and ies (ice) are very well known in The Netherlands.
