Wessely
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wessely is a surname that may refer to
- Carl Bernhard Wessely (1768-1826), composer
- Ignaz Emanuel Wessely (1841-1900), sometimes abbreviated J.E. Wessely (because in blackletter, upper case I and J are identical), linguist, born in Vienna, died in Berlin. Author of two-way translation dictionaries English-French, English-German, English-Italian, English-Latin, English-Spanish, and English-Swedish, which were published both in Europe and the United States and reprinted in the U.S. in the 1940s.

- A brief note: The English-Swedish dictionary is printed without stating any year. Its Swedish orthography goes back to before the 1889 spelling reform (afdelning, jern, qvinna) and it doesn't list automobile (around 1900), bicycle (developed in the 1880s), velociped or wireless (around 1900), but does include telephon (sic! patented 1876). A reasonable guess is that this English-Swedish dictionary was written in the 1880s.
