[edit] Selected picture

The portal is lacking in selected pictures. I have nominated two images in Portal:West Bengal/Selected picture candidates. Please help in building up more selected pictures. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 10:01, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Selected biography

At present we have some selected biographies which also happen to be selected articles. As we plan to incorporate automated features in the portal, we need to take care so that same articles by chance do not appear as selected article and selected bio. So it has been proposed that we remove from selected biography pool articles that are selected articles as well (Tagore, Satyajit Ray, Nazrul). You can check discussion here and here. Please comment. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:28, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Ideas for more selected biographies can be found at Legendary personalities in Bengal. Regards, S.D. ¿п? § 01:40, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] "Selected article"

Proposal: all "selected articles" be renamed "featured articles". Since the current selected articles are featured articles, only these should be featured on the main page. Portals exist to highlight the breadth and quality of Wikipedia's content. Only articles which have been through FAC should be used as featured articles, and thus in-portal nominations of selected articles will only be used to vote to sent an article to FAC. Thoughts? riana_dzasta 04:28, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

I agree. Also, if possible, a selected town box would be nice for the towns, like Cooch Behar, that aren't FA's. Thoughts? S.D. ¿п? § 04:39, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
That could work, I like that idea. I'll leave Dwaipayan and Mr Niyogi notes to see what they think. riana_dzasta 04:59, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Oh, and while the discussion is occurring, I brought the number of selected articles to eight, meaning Cooch Behar won't show up on the portal since it isn't a featured article. All other articles are both selected and featured articles. Cheers, S.D. ¿п? § 12:37, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
We are lucky that West Bengal related Featured Articles number 8. But many state related portals do not have so many featured articles. So this suggestion by Riana won't be applicable to many Indian portals. IMO, selected articles need not be featured ones. Getting an article to featured status is getting very tough these days. With so few contributors for West Bengal related topics, I doubt if we will be able to supply a respectable number of featured articles regularly. Even in distant future we may be stuck at a number of 8 only. Rather, we should follow what Portal:India does. Articles that are quite good but not featured can be nominated for selected article candidacy in the portal. In that case, at least we'll get some more selected articles to portray in the WB portal.
Just for an example, the article Delhi is in FAC for last 14 days, with very lukeworm response. I had to tell people in the Wikipedia talk:Notice board for India-related topics that Delhi is in FAC! No good response yet. Also bringing articles to featured status needs lot of effort and time. Thats why I am suggesting to follow the portal:India so far as selected articles are concerned. [Reset] OK, that's fine. I just wanted to know what people thought :) We'll keep it as is, then. riana_dzasta 15:05, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

I've fixed everything back to selected articles. Cooch Behar will now show up on the portal. :) Cheers, S.D. ¿п? § 00:14, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
