West Virginia (named after Queen Elizabeth I of England, who was known as the Virgin Queen) and was part of Virginia until President Lincoln issued a proclamation admitting West Virginia into the Union at the end of sixty days (June 20, 1863) effectively creating the state.
The ancient mound builder's are some of the first inhabitants of what is now West Virginia. In 1671, General Abram Wood, at the direction of Royal Governor William Berkeley of the Virginia Colony, sent a party which discovered Kanawha Falls. In 1725 German settlers from Pennsylvania founded New Mecklenburg, the present Shepherdstown, on the Potomac River.

USS Huntington (CL-107) a Fargo-class light cruiser, was the second ship of the United States Navy named after the city of Huntington, West Virginia. She was built during World War II but not completed until after the end of the war and in use for only a few years.
Huntington was launched by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, Camden, New Jersey, 8 April 1943, sponsored by Mrs. M. L. Jarrett, Jr., and commissioned 23 February 1946, Captain D. R. Tallman in command. (read more...)
Saddle Mountain is a section of Knobly Mountain in Mineral County, West Virginia. The mountain is so named for its shape. It is best viewed from Skyline which is located along US 50 at the intersection with WV 42.
