Initially an officer under Liu Biao, he joined Cao Cao, ruler of Wei, reluctantly when Liu Biao's successor surrendered to Cao Cao. He participated at the Battle of Changban against Liu Bei and Battle of Chibi against Sun Quan and Liu Bei.
After the death of Cao Cao, he went on to serve Cao Pi. However, when he set out to attack Eastern Wu with Cao Zhen and Zhang Liao, he fell victim to Xu Sheng's plot and was defeated.
