Welsummer

Welsummer is a medium heavy chicken breed originally from the small village of Welsum, The Netherlands.

It was bred from local fowls of mixed origin, Rhode Island Reds, Barnevelders, and Partridge Leghorns at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1922-23 steps were taken to fix a standard after the birds began to show a good deal of uniformity.

It is a light, calm breed, with rustic-red and orange colour. Representations of cockerels in the media are often based upon the "classic" Welsummer look. Its eggs are dark-brown and spotty. There is also a Bantam Welsummer breed which is similar but lays light brown eggs.

  • Cock weight: 3.5 kg
  • Hen weight: 2.5 to 3 kg

Bantam:

  • Egg weight: 40 g
  • Cock weight: 1 kg
  • Hen weight: 900 g
