Wellington United
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wellington United is soccer club in Wellington, New Zealand.
Founded in 1954 by Dutch immigrants, the club was named Zealandia but this was changed to Wellington United in 1964. Four years later, the club merged with another local club, Diamond, to be known as Wellington Diamond United. It was this point that the club played in the Central Region's Division One, finishing a respectable 4th out 10 teams in the 1968 season. The club even made it to the National League for the 1973 season but it only lasted until the end of the following season before they found themselves back in Division One.
1976 saw the club become a National League stalwart, winning the competition on no fewer than three occasions. The last of these title successes was back in the 1985 season. Nowadays the team plays in the Central Region Premier Division where it finished a creditable 5th in 2006 under current coach, Ian Minshull.
