[edit] History

Wellington was established in 1972, as Dingley Area High School. Its name changed to Mulgrave High School, then to Wellington High School in January 1973. Wellington was originally intended for the Dingley area, but was relocated by the Education Department to the Mulgrave area.

  • When first opened, the school had 147 students and 9 teachers. In 2005 there were 1068 students and 76 teachers.
  • The college's A Block was destroyed by fire on the 28th of October 1987.

[edit] Principals

Founding principal of the school was the late A.M. (Gus) Fogarty, from 1973 to 1977. M.B(Max) Peters was appointed principal in 1978 after the death of Mr. Forgarty in 1977. Max Peters retired in July 1982 and Jack Landvogt was appointed in 1984, then retired in 1986. John Coulson was appointed in 1987, and introduced the school motto (Caring, Striving, Learning) and the college crest. Mr. John Coulson retired in 2004 and the current principal, Ms. Mary-Jo Putrino, was appointed.

[edit] Student Leaders

The most influential and well respected student leaders in Wellington's history were from the graduating class of 2006.

[edit] Houses

The House System commenced in 1988 and the titles are derived from the names of four ships from the historic First Fleet that landed the first permanent European settlers from Great Britain in Australia two hundred years earlier in 1788 under the command of the Governor, Captain Arthur Phillip.

Each house is led by two Senior House Captains (year 12) and six Vice House Captains (years 8, 10 and 11)

  • Alexander (Gold)
  • Borrowdale (Blue)
  • Penrhyn (Red)
  • Sirius (Green)

Talk of introduing a 'black' house was quickly dismissed when some students threatened legal action. However, Gold house still exists for now.

Students participate in a number of sporting and non-sporting activities during the year to gain points towards the M.B. Peter Cup for their house. There are three major house sporting carnivals in a year. They are the Swimming, Athletics and Cross-Country carnivals.

[edit] School Structure

The school has two large courtyards surrounded by blocks of classrooms. There is an A, G, J, B, C, P and R block. The school also has a basketball court and a large open area which is referred to as the "oval". The is also a large multi-purpose assembly hall with adjoining change rooms and a small gym. [edit] Sporting Achievements

2000 Boys VCE soccer team won the state championship

2006 Boys Senior Rugby Team The Wellington Blues

The Wellington boys rugby team was created in 2006 after 4 years of constant application from past students Mark Amosa, Jordan Moors and Nam Nguyen. After finally being accepted, the amount of success this team garnered, was nothing short of remarkable. The team was comprised of school students who have loved and wished to play the game and finally were rewarded with a team competing in the state championships.

The road to the state championship was not over, but more or less just begun. Although they had there place in the competition they still needed a care taker coach, transport and uniform. After a long and winding search they found there man in Peter Rolle Bates who was chosen as the man to lead this band of misfits into the state championships. The misfits training period to the championship was short(2 weeks)and compressed, it was decided that they wouldn't do many training drills or fitness, but rather focus on what style of game they were going to play, since they had to go and find students willing to play for the school they didn't have much time to prepare. with such a short amount of time on hand, they decided on a free flowing style that would be very dangerous on both accounts, for both the opposition and the team itself.

When judgment day finally had come, many of the players had mixed emotions, the senior members that had been wishing for the team for what seamed like an eternity, were pumped and ready for action, while the young rookies on the team were nervous, but at the same time enthusiastic about the possibilities of winning a state championship for the oldies.

The bus ride to the event was excruciatingly painful as the players had to get dressed on the bus and run on and play straight away. When the team arrived 15 minutes late for the opening match, they had to rush out onto the field against a rugby school with many talented players that were primed for action. With no time to feel any butterfly's, the blues ran out and played a great game of rugby. The game started off great as the Blue boys put on massive hits on the opposition and played expansive rugby. One set in defense typified the teams efforts as the opposition rugby schools best player ran into a massive shoulder charge from Jordan Moors, another from Mark Amosa and amazingly still standing was crunched with a brilliant spear tackle from Nam Nguyen. The Blue boys did themselves proud and won a close game 32 to 28 with sensational tries from Jordan Moors when he brushed of five players, Mark Amosa, Jesse Moors, "LEZ".

The second game was against a school team that was not a rugby school but definitely had rugby talent. The team was known as Croighten who had a powerful prop who had a disfigured eye(Very nice person) and a very dangerous and elusive outside back. The kick off set the tone for the Blue's when Nam Nguyen crunched the opposing winger. After this gigantic hit, the team kept the pressure up and didn't let the opposition make any free metres. The Blues in this game showed grit, determination, class and everything they were about, from covering miss tackles to one of the smaller players tackling to powerful prop one on one (the prop was 195cm Nam was 175cm)and had to come off with a minor head injury. The Blues won the game by a fairly large margin which included a magnificent try from Nam Nguyen when he took the ball from the 70m line and stepped one player, bumped off another and outran the last defender to score a long range try that started the flood gates.

The day of defeat against a mighty South Oakleigh team which had Phillip "Showtime" Roberts the AIS representative, speedster Phillip Kearf, the younger Robbie Kearf and the junk yard dogg Kahn int their linup. The game had already started off on the wrong foot as Jordan the superstar of the team was not allowed to participate as he was a representative player. The game started evenly on the balance as it went try for try, but disaster struck when one of the senior players Nam Nguyen was knocked out of the game with a shoulder injury and left the game for treatment. While he was away the younger studs of the team Lez, Afa, James, Kenny, Ray, Jesse and the only remaining senior player Mark Amosa kept in touch by matching it with the much more decorated opponent and trailed by only one try. Nam who had received treatment for his shoulder was not advised to continue but such was his desire to play and help his team win he came back on and scored a try to level it but after a penalty put South Oakleigh in scoring range the team made no mistake. The team had put up a valiant effort to hold out until a desperation pass on the fifth tackel, somehow found its way to a unmarked South Oakleigh player who had no trouble scoring the crucial try, which went a long way to determined the outcome. But with the grit and determination that the Boys in Blue had, they marched down the field and scored a try through Jesse Moors, but the game tying field goal by Nam Nguyen missed the post badly and they suffered a major blow to the teams championship hopes.

The old saying you win some and you lose some, forgot to add you draw some as well. The boys in Blue played Cranbourne who had high hopes of winning the championship, but instead ended up finishing last in the pool, but this didn't stop them from saving their best for last. This game also started off without Jordan Moors and shortly after lost Nam Nguyen to a fractured ankle but that didn't stop the passion and desire which was worn on those ripped and bloody reused jersey, which help bring the team back from a big deficit and scoring one try after another to draw the game, but the most amazing try came in the last seconds when Lez spreaded the ball out to James and he drew and past to Kenny who raced down the sideline and beat everybody to the try line to earn a draw.

The Blues where scheduled to play in the bronze medal match but had to leave early due to the bus driver being cranky.

The South Oakleigh team won the state championships 36 -16 against Bayside but the Blue boys could only hold their heads up high as they showed courage, passion, desire, heart and enough courage to last a thousand years.

They came as individuals and left as a band of brothers who's bond have been forged so strong, they could never forget that special moment for the rest of there lives, because for one day they were truly heroes.
