Welcome Wagon

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Welcome Wagon is an organization whose mission is to greet new homeowners as they relocate, to acquaint them with their neighborhood and to market the products and services of local businesses.

The company was founded in 1928, by Thomas Briggs in Memphis, Tennessee. At that time, Welcome Wagon "hostesses" would visit new homeowner families in their new home with a basket containing small gifts and coupons from contributing businesses. These home visits continued for over 50 years until the early 1980s, but ultimately, as more women entered the workforce, no one was at home during the day to answer the door when the Welcome Wagon lady knocked.

Today, Welcome Wagon is a company headquartered in Plainview, New York, with local representatives throughout the United States. Although the day of door-to-door neighborly visits are a thing of the past, Welcome Wagon still markets to new residents through their mailboxes and the internet.
