Jon brings home a talking bathroom scale that also tells people their fortune. He decides to slip out of his heavy clothes before he tests it; meanwhile, Garfield tests it himself, and soon learns that he is twenty pounds overweight and that his fortune is that he will be splutted (hit in the face with a pie -- which soon happens). He then tampers with the scale, and when Jon steps onto it, he is told that he is fifty pounds overweight and that his fortune is that he will go on a strict diet.

Jon enlists Garfield’s help in his dieting. After Garfield gives Jon half of a lettuce leaf to eat while he eats everything else, Jon takes Garfield outside so they can both exercise. After a series of exercises including jogging, pulling weights and jumping jacks, Garfield decides to set the scale back to accurate weight.

Garfield steps onto the scale again, and he is told that he is still twenty pounds overweight and that his fortune is that he is about to get more exercise. Then Jon steps onto the scale, where he is told that he is the correct weight for his height. He is then told that his fortune is to punish Garfield for tampering with the scale earlier. Jon then chases Garfield around the house and then down the block, and the scale precisely details everything that happens throughout the chase. The scale concludes by saying that Jon and Garfield live “heavily ever after.”

• Odie does not appear in this episode.

• The back cover of Jon’s diet book is treated as the front cover.
• Garfield says that he will set the scale back to accurate weight, but he never actually does -- yet the scale still gives accurate weight measurements for himself and Jon.
