[edit] Character
WED-15-77 was a Treadwell (Droid), a utility and repair droid that belonged to the Lars family. The droid appears with Luke Skywalker in the opening scene of the Anchorhead Story of Star Wars, which was cut from Episode IV. In this scene, WED-15-77 assists Luke while he repairs a moisture vaporator on the outskirts of the Lars moisture farm. When Luke witnesses a starship battle, he abandons his chores to tell his friends in Anchorhead. However, WED-15-77 malfunctions and is left behind by Luke.
[edit] Significance
This scene of Luke and the malfunctioning WED-15-77 is significant in that it illustrates the problems of maintaining droids in the harsh conditions of Tatooine and it establishes the need for Owen Lars to purchase new droids from the Jawas (which end up being C-3P0 and R2-D2). Several other Treadwells appear in the Star Wars movies, including a later scene in the Anchorhead Story of Star Wars. The frequent appearance of the Treadwell (Droid) illustrates that they were cheap, albeit inefficient, sources of droid-labor. WED-15-77 is the type of droid that would have been common on a small moisture farm in the Outer Rim.
