[edit] Webalect
Webalect is a term that was coined by Craig Lamb and pm&l custom business solutions ([1]), a software company in Rochester, NY. The word was created and used after years mediating explanations and conversations surrounding crafting web applications to express a distinct message but identifying common denominators amongst specific industries and/or user group regarding features and aesthetic.
Webalect is a derivative of the word dialect, but encapsulates the entire message of a web site as well as knowing what your audience expects of a site. For example, if a user is looking up his/her doctor’s web site they would expect a certain experience and message. The doctor wants to broadcast a message of education, caring and safety. The user would expect lots of topical information regarding health and perhaps the ability to schedule an appointment or pay a bill. These expectations could be considered ‘standard’ for this industry and/or user group. That is the doctor’s Webalect. Conversely, a gamers site would be bold, fun and animated while the user would expect to find game reviews, download of trials and blogging about new releases; gamer Webalect.
The term has grown to become part of standard web-based jargon amongst webmasters and brand marketing specialists as a means of defining a website’s message and/or services.
In 2007, Webalect was also released as a software package by pm&l to allow web administrator or webmasters to dictate and edit their message through images, words, colors and other media. It is a non-technical content management system.
