FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» August 11, 1907: In the 2nd game of a doubleheader, shortened to seven innings by prior agreement, St. Louis Cardinals' Ed Karger pitches a perfect game 4-0 against the Boston Doves. » August 27, 1907: Christy Mathewson fashions a 3-hit shutout over the Cardinals and driving in the only run with a double. Ed Karger takes the hard luck loss.
» December 12, 1908: The Cardinals are busy. First they get C Admiral Schlei from the Reds for pitchers Ed Karger and Art Fromme. Then they pack off Schlei, along with P Bugs Raymond and OF Red Murray, to the Giants for veteran catcher Roger Bresnahan. Bresnahan, a future Hall of Famer, will be the player/manager of the Cardinals for the next four years. Raymond lost 25 games in 1908, but a record 11 of them were by shutouts.
» June 27, 1911: In the 7th inning at Huntington Avenue Grounds, the A's Stuffy McInnis steps into the batter's box to lead off and hits Ed Karger's warm-up pitch for an inside-the-park home run while the Red Sox are still taking their positions. Boston manager Patsy Donovan's protests to ump Ben Egan, but Egan rejects the protest on the basis of Ban Johnson's new rule prohibiting warm-up pitches. The A's win, 7–3. Ban Johnson's time-saving rule, which declares that pitchers must throw as soon as the batter is in the box, is soon withdrawn.
