Weasley's Wizard Wheezes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Weasley's Wizard Wheezes is a fictional joke and gag store from the Harry Potter series of books. It is run by the Weasley twins, Fred and George along with an employee named Verity. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry gave them his winnings from the Triwizard Tournament, which they use to start the business in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix after their spectacular swan song from Hogwarts during Dolores Umbridge's tenure as Headmistress. The shop itself is located in Diagon Alley. The inventory included several items developed prior to the shop's opening seen in previous books, as well as new items revealed in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The address is ninety-three, Diagon Alley[HP5].

In the same book, the twins had considered buying the now-defunct Zonko's Joke Shop in Hogsmeade, but decided against it after learning Hogsmeade would become off-limits to students.

[edit] Items

  • Canary Creams: Transfigure the user into a canary for a few minutes.
  • Decoy Detonators: Small object resembling a horn that, when dropped on the ground, will scurry away at a distance and make a loud distracting noise.
  • Edible Dark Marks: Makes whoever eats them sick.
  • Extendable Ears: Extendable Ears were one of the first perfected products in the twins' inventory. They are long, thin, similar to flesh-colored string, and allow the user to hear far-away conversations. The twins were caught several times by Mrs. Weasley after trying to overhear the Order of the Phoenix's meetings. They can't listen through doors if an Imperturbable charm has been placed on the door.
  • Fainting Fancies: A cake or sweet which, when eaten, causes the user to faint. The afflicted person revives shortly after ingestion.
  • Fanged Frisbees:Fanged Frisbees are frisbees that have fangs on the edge and may be enchanted to fly at will.
  • Headless Hat: Creates a limited field of invisibility. Specifically, the wearer's head. Hermione actually calls it "Clever," which, coming from Hermione, is one of the greatest compliments one can receive. The hat's properties--making an object invisible without actually becoming invisible itself--are apparently very difficult to make right.
  • Patented daydream charm: Instructions on casting an incantation on yourself to enter a realistic thirty-minute daydream. Minor side-effects include vacant expression and drooling.
  • Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder : When sprinkled into the air, creates an area of impenetrable darkness. Draco Malfoy used this in the Death Eaters' attack on Hogwarts in Half-Blood Prince. It holds off spells such as incendio (fire), lumos (light), and supposedly other light charms, even though Malfoy's Hand of Glory can penetrate it.
  • Portable Swamp: Creates a swamp when used. This is employed against Dolores Umbridge to distract her in OOTP.
  • Punching Telescopes: Discovered by Hermione Granger in Fred and George's bedroom. If one squeezes it, a small fist pops out and gives the person who squeezed it a black eye.
  • Reuseable Hangman: A classic game of Hangman with an added twist; a wooden doll actually climbs up the stairs of a set of gallows with each wrong guess, and hangs itself if the player loses.
  • Shield Hats: Automatically cast a Shield Charm on the wearer, causing minor to moderate curses and jinxes to be reflected back at the caster. Come in other forms as well, such as Shield Cloaks and Shield Gloves. First made as a joke, until the Ministry bought 500 of them and other Shield garments.
  • Skiving Snackbox : These hold a variety of sweets that, when eaten, cause the subject to show symptoms of some sort of illness, such as vomiting or nosebleed. Used for getting out of classes. The sweets have two differently coloured halves. The first half causes the malady, and the second half is the antidote. Skiving Snackboxes include Fever Fudge, Nosebleed Nougat, and Puking Pastilles. They are still working on them so when the buyer eats one side they will feel better instantly.
    • Nosebleed Nougat: In normal usage at Hogwarts, the first half causes nosebleed in the user and allows him to be sent to the Hospital Wing. After leaving the class, the second half of the candy restores the user to full health. In Order of the Phoenix, Hermione too expressed displeasure at the twins' actions, especially them testing the candies on younger students. They are the most popular variety.
    • Puking Pastilles: Puking Pastilles similar to other Skiving Snackboxes, causing the user to vomit. The twins show off the invention in Order of the Phoenix to Hermione's displeasure. It is unclear how one is supposed to eat the second half while puking.
    • Fever Fudge: Fever Fudge makes the user's temperature go up, but boils appear "in places that you don't talk about in public", at least when they were first created. It is unclear whether Fred and George have since solved the problem. In Order of the Phoenix, after Fred and George's departure from Hogwarts, the students used Skiving Snackboxes in droves to trouble Dolores Umbridge. Whole classfuls of students used these sweets to get out of class. Umbridge did not find out the reason for the sudden illness of students, and was apparently told by them that they were suffering from "Umbridge-itis".
  • Trick Wands: When waved they turn into chickens or pairs of pants, intended to be subtly switched with a real wand.
  • Ton Tongue Toffees: Toffee that, when eaten, causes the user's tongue to grow to an amazing length, and become extremely heavy. They are wrapped in brightly coloured wrappers. Fred and George Weasley used this new invention on Dudley Dursley.
  • U-No-Poo: U-No-Poo is first described in Half-Blood Prince, described as causing constipation; it is a powder that can be secretly added to food. The sign hanging on the shop's window display reads, "Why are you worrying about You-Know-Who? You should be worrying about U-No-Poo — The constipation sensation that's gripping the nation!"
  • Wildfire Whiz-Bangs: Fireworks. Includes:
    • Basic Blaze Box (5 galleons)
    • Deflagration Deluxe (20 galleons)
    • Dragons and bats comprised from coloured sparks
    • Pink Catherine wheels that fly through the air
    • Silver-tailed rockets
    • Firecrackers that blast for hours
    • Sparklers that write swear words; probably charmed
    • (very likely to be unintentional) Winged piglets made from pink and silver sparks that fly around - created when a Catherine wheel collides with a rocket.
