Waynesboro is a small town in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, 78 miles (126 km) northwest of Baltimore, Maryland

Waynesboro had been chiefly an industrial town in the early years of the twentieth century. It was known for the manufacture of engines, boilers, grinders, threshers, boring machines, bolt cutters, wood and iron workers' vises, nut facers, etc. There were also foundries and machine shops, and manufactories of lumber products. Some local manufacturing companies included Frick Company, Geiser Company, and Landis Tool Company. In 1900, 5,396 people lived here; in 1910, 7,199 people; and in 1940 10,231 lived here. The population was 9,614 at the 2000 census.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 9,614 people, 4,228 households, and 2,553 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,104.8/km² (2,864.0/mi²). There were 4,633 housing units at an average density of 532.4/km² (1,380.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough was 95.20% White, 2.62% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.54% of the population.

There were 4,228 households out of which 27.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.1% were married couples living together, 12.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.6% were non-families. 34.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.87.

In the borough the population was spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 88.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.8 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $31,574, and the median income for a family was $39,951. Males had a median income of $31,585 versus $22,466 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,063. About 7.0% of families and 10.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.2% of those under age 18 and 8.4% of those age 65 or over.
