Wayne "The Dominator" Johnston (born December 19, 1957) is a former Australian rules footballer.
The dark-skinned Johnston, who was adopted, played 209 games and kicked 283 goals for the Carlton Football Club, in a career spanning 1979-1990. After initially failing to gain a berth in the Carlton side, Johnston moved to VFA side Prahran, under coach Mick Erwin, and was part of their premiership winning team.
Under VFL zone laws in those days, in 1979 Johnston asked if he could be cleared to play for the Melbourne Football Club, but coach Alex Jesaulenko wanted to see him play before axing him. And at this point, Johnston impressed, and was a vital member of the 1979 premiership side. He became known as the Dominator due to his aggression at the ball, and he could play either across the half-forward line or in the centre.
Johnston was made captain of the Blues from 1984-1985, and Johnston's importance was critical in high-pressure games and especially finals. He played In the Carlton premiership sides of 1979, 1981, 1982 and 1987.
Johnston and family moved to Melbourne to start a fresh life where he found a new love, actress Kate Kendall. Since living in the AFL-loved environment Johnston has come back to football as he is currently the runner for the Richmond Tigers. His sons are very keen footballers who share some of the brilliance and classy skill of their father. They are likely to be picked up in the AFL Draft in the near future.
