[edit] Benefits

This station will serve motorists on Interstate 80, Route 23 and U.S. Route 46 near William Paterson University. It will have 1,000 parking spaces, a station platform along the Montclair-Boonton Line, and bus platforms. New Jersey Transit hopes that this combined rail and bus station will become an "interceptor station," that will help relieve the habitual congestion at the West Belt Road Interchange, where the three major highways meet.

[edit] Project cost

US $51 million is currently budgeted for this project.

[edit] Current status

The New Jersey Transit project description dated November 2005 states that the agency would be advertising for a construction contract beginning in March 2006 for "off-site road improvements." Motorists traveling on the interchange of Interstate 80, U.S. Route 46, and NJ Route 23 near the Willowbrook Mall (the West Belt Road Interchange, aka "The Route 46 Spaghetti Bowl") during July and August 2006 did notice heightened construction activity, lane closures, and rush-hour traffic delays, all of which could represent the "off-site road improvements" that the project calls for.

More recently, on September 13, 2006, New Jersey Transit's Board of Directors formally awarded the contract to construct this facility. Construction is due to begin in the fall of 2006 and to finish in early 2008.[2]

Persons interested in checking on the current status of this project can watch the NJ Transit Procurement Calendar.[3]

Construction has begun at the site located between RT23 southbound lanes and the existing train line. A large wooded area has been cleared and contruction has begun on the entrance and exit access ramps. April 2007.
