[edit] HISTORY

The Wayamba Campus of the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka was established on the recommendation of a Committee consisting of Hon. Wishva Warnapala, Deputy Minister of Education & Higher Education as Chairman. This Committee was appointed by the Hon. Minister of Education and Higher Education Richard Pathiranna on 22nd December,1994 to report on the Affiliated University Colleges. On the recommendation of the above Committee, nine Affiliated University Colleges spread out in various provinces of the country were merged to form two National Universities, the Rajarata and Sabaragamuwa Universities of Sri Lanka on 07th November 1996. The Affiliated University College of the North Western province which consisted of two academic sections namely; Home Science and Nutrition and the Agriculture, originally affiliated to the Universities of Kelaniya and Peradeniya respectively, were merged to from the Wayamba Campus and established in terms of the provision of the Sections 18 and 47 (1) of the University Act. No. 16 of 1978 and Campus Board Ordinance No 3 of 1995. As provided in the Act referred to above, two Faculties were set up to form the Wayamba Campus namely, the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and the Faculty of Applied Sciences I , each with three Departments of Study.

The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences constituted the Departments of Plantation Management, Horticultural Sciences and Food Technology and Agricultural Engineering, while the Faculty of Applied Sciences I consisted of the Departments of Mathematical Sciences , Industrial Management and Computer Studies, Nutrition and Community Resources Management.

A committee appointed in 1999 made recommendations to upgrade the Wayamba Campus to a fully-fledged University. Based on the recommendations of this committee, the Wayamba University was established in August 1999 with four Faculties namely Faculty of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Business Studies and Finance, Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management and Faculty of Livestock, Fisheries and Nutrition.

EVEN THOUGH THE UNIVERSITY WAS ESTABLISHED WITH BETTER VIEWS THE DEVELOPMENT WAS AT A SNAI'S PACE. THE GOVERNMENT VISION TO DEVELOP WAYMBA UNIVERSITY WAS STRENGHTHENED AND FASTENED BY THE STRUGGLES OF THE STUDENTS' UNIONS[2]. NOW IT'S AT RIGHT PACE LEADING TO A NEW ERA OF FREE EDUCATION.

[edit] DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY

Objectives To motivate the new generation of students and enthusiastic research works with covering theoretical as well as practical aspects in an integral manner on plant and animal related molecular techniques and tissue culture practices in Biotechnology in order to meet the increasing demand for advanced knowledge in this field. Degree programmer Common courses are introduced in the first two years acquiring basic knowledge in Genetics, Recombinant DNA-Technology, Cell Biology, Tissue Culture PlantBiochemistry and Immunology. Specialization courses in the third and fourth years cover in detail including Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Genetics and Breeding, Genetic Engineering, Plant Tissue Culture, Immunology and Disease Diagnostics, Pathological techniques, Food and Industrial Biotechnology and Biochemical Instrumentation. All courses modules consist of practical components to strengthen the knowledge gathered from the theoretical modules. Modern laboratory is available molecular laboratories in Research Institutes are also arranged for providing an adequate training to develop student�s practical skills. [edit] DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE

Horticulture and Landscape Gardening in general, encompasses the growing of fruits, vegetables for food production and flower and foliage plants to beautify the environment. Features of horticulture include the use of intensive and specialized technologies in production and the use of diversity of the species grown with a wide range of plant species and forms in improving the quality of landscape and environment. Hence, the objectives of the course is to develop the students� ability to understand, use and contribute to the expanding scientific and technological contents of the subject and to make significant contributions towards growing demands of the horticultural sector and landscape gardening in the country. [edit] AGRIBUSINESS MANAGEMENT

With new developments taking place in the agricultural sector of this country, the traditional subsistence agriculture is changing rapidly and becoming more commercialized. During this commercialization process, development of managerial skills has become a necessity to achieve efficient and effective output from the sector. Therefore, knowledge and training on Agribusiness Management is one of the key areas that should be given to the agriculture graduands, for better management of the agribusiness sector in the country. The courses that offered by the Department of Agribusiness Management are capable of producing graduates with high calibre, securing a high demand in the job market. The objective of the degree programme is to provide the graduate with scientific knowledge and practical know-how in agronomic and manufacturing processes in plantation agriculture and inculcate managerial skills and confidence in decision making with respect to resource allocation in plantations. The course will impart skills in agronomy, farm management, business skills, personnel management and elements of accounting. It is expected that the trained graduates will be able to manage the plantation industry, so vital to the economy of the country. fACULTY OF LIVESTOCK FISHERIES & NUTRITION

The demand for livestock products has increased dramatically in resent years and this trend is expected continuing the next 2 decades. The needs for qualified personnel not so much in primary farm level production but in the post-harvest handling and processing of meat & milk is now felt as an urgent need. The courses given by this department will complement those in food and nutrition and enable them to obtain a specialized knowledge in foods as well as the products originating from domestic animals.

Courses have been designed to provide students with a sound theoretical knowledge in food science and technology as well as a through practical training in food processing, product development, value addition and quality control. The practical training will include laboratory exercises as well as visits to reputed food processing plants.

[edit] AQUACULTURE & FISHERIES

This is the first fully-fledged Department for teaching Aquaculture & Fisheries in the University system. The courses have been developed to meet the demand for specialized knowledge and skills in applied fisheries and aquaculture where current human resources are considered inadequate. The courses will also cover areas such as management of aquatic environments, conservation and rational exploitation of aquatic resources.

Origin of the Department of Applied Nutrition:

In 1996, the Department of Nutrition and Community Resources Management (NCRM) was established at Wayamba Campus, Kuliyapitiya under the Faculty of Applied Sciences I, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka. In 1999 Wayamba Campus was upgraded to a fully-fledge Wayamba University of Sri Lanka (WUSL). The Department of NCRM is now under the Faculty of Livestock, Fisheries and Nutrition and re-named as the Department of Applied Nutrition.

Our vision is to achieve excellence in higher education, research and technology, training and developing human resources to meet national and global needs.

Mission:    

The mission of the Department of Applied Nutrition is to improve nutrition and health status of the population in Sri Lanka through:


   Learning:  Educating undergraduate to excel in food and nutrition practice,
                      research, policy and teaching;
   Research: Advancing knowledge and understanding of the biological,
                     socioeconomic and behavioral factors effecting the nutrition and
                      health of the population;
   Service:    Conducting outreach programme for the benefit of communities,
                    institution, government and organizations at local and national levels;
   Practice:  Providing technical assistance and consultation in the public and
                    private sectors and developing partnership local, national, and
                     international agencies,  organizations and groups.

History


The Faculty of Business Studies and Finance of the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka was established with effect from 01 October 1999 by The Government notification in the Extraordinary Gazette No.1093/8 of Tuesday, 17 August 1999. The Faculty is located at Kuliyapitiya premises of the University and is comprised with four Departments of studies, namely, Department of Business Management, Department of Accountancy & Business Finance, Department of Banking and Finance and Department of Insurance &Valuation. The Four Departments of The Faculty of Business Studies and Finance offer degree courses leading to B.Sc. (special) degree in Business Management, B.Sc. (special) degree in Accountancy & Business Finance, B.Sc. (special) degree in Banking & Finance, B.Sc. (special) degree in Insurance & Valuation respectively. The Faculty of Business Studies & Finance is committed to pursue excellence in Teaching in management subjects conducting management researches and community services in the region while making all efforts to be the center of excellence for Business Studies and Business Finance education in Sri Lanka.

[edit] FACULTY OF APPLIED SCIENCES


The Faculty of Applied Sciences was in existence even under the period of Wayamba Campus of Rajarata University with only three Departments namely, Mathematical Sciences, Industrial Management and Computer Science, Applied Nutrition

Later in 1999 when Wayamba University of Sri Lanka was formed, five Departments were attached to the Faculty. They are Department of Electronics, Department of Computing and Information Systems, Department of Industrial Management and Department of Applied Nutrition. In year 2004, the Department of Applied Nutrition was separated from the Faculty and now it is attached to the Faculty of Livestock, Fisheries & Nutrition. With new four Departments, the Faculty has developed its vision and mission in align with the University vision and mission and also considering the national demands.
