Way of the Samurai 3, also known as Samurai Dou 3, was announced in the 2005 October edition of the Famitsū magazine in Japan. The magazine mentioned a 2007 release year for Japan. Despite it being announced a little over a year ago, there is no further information about the game available at this time. A Samurai Dou Online was also announced for the Xbox 360 in the same edition of Famitsū, originally with an announced release date of Winter 2006; however, there has been no further word of Samurai Dou Online. It is uncertain whether Samurai Dou Online will be a version of Samurai Dou 3 or a different game entirely.

It has been said by some people that Samurai Western is Way of the Samurai 3, but this is not true. As Samurai Western does not carry the "Way of the Samurai" tag, it is not actually the third game. A comparison one can make is that Samurai Western is to Way of the Samurai 3 as Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is to Final Fantasy 3. Also, Way of the Samurai 3 was announced in Famitsū roughly nine months after Samurai Western's release.
