[edit] History
Wave 89.1 began regular operations shortly after March 1, 2001,after Quest, through a government-sponsored bidding, won the rights to the frequency and the facilities of the defunct and sequestered DZMZ (Danze Muzic Zone 89 DMZ, then owned by Intercontinental Broadcasting Corp.).
Managed by former Magic 89.9 jock Rolando Sulit a.k.a. Joe D'Mango, the station began its operations with a pop soul, pop jazz easy listening format. Some months later, its programming gradually shifted to full pop R&B and as of this year, it also was playing hip-hop tunes, particularly on weekends.
[edit] Programs
"Love Notes", the well-loved FM radio counseling program, now broadcasts on Wave 89.1 and has been doing so since the station's inception. Joe D'Mango now just goes on air through this 15 minute program, while he spends usually the rest of his time doing behind the scenes operations.
"Soul Revue" is the station's weekend top 10 R&B chart countdown largely based on the listener's requests and votes. It spawned a nightly countdown sibling in the "Top 8 at Eight", which broadcasts daily except Wednesdays.
"Wave Back Wednesday" is the station's classic R&B programming block. In this program, mostly pop jazz classics from the '80s and some from the early '90s, were played.
"Wave Weekend Flava", the station's only Sunday afternoon block dedicated to the raw hip hop and R&B stuff with more of the rough side.
"Saturday Getaway", the station's Saturday night retro drive, now playing also the present dance club stuff.
"The Blue Room", only the best selected chillout stuff as Erik Mana can deliver.
[edit] The Most Influential Radio Station
Wave 89.1's listenership profile consists of some of the pop music industry's best. Its programs are also acclaimed for successfully integrating the largely western pop R&B sound in an Asian market.
Most upscale drivers in Metro Manila picked Wave 89.1 as their station of choice on the road, making them also the number one station dishing out the R&B sound.
