Wausau East High School, or Wausau High School as it was once known, opened its doors on the corner of Seventh and Fulton Streets, in 1898. Through the years, its names have changed from Wausau High, to Wausau Senior High, and finally Wausau East High when its rival school, Wausau West High School opened in the early 1970s.

In 1999, voters of Wausau, passed a referedum to construct a new high school on 18th Street on a site that has been proposed since the 1970s. The new school opened its doors on September 2004. Currently, the old Wausau East building serves as a housing complex for middle income people.
