Waukon, Iowa

Waukon is an incorporated municipality constituting the county seat of Allamakee County, Iowa, United States. The population was 4,131 at the 2000 census. GR6.

Waukon is named for Chief Waukon Decorah, a Ho Chunk who cooperated with whites during the Black Hawk War and whose people were subsequently forced out of Wisconsin into Northeast Iowa.

The team-name for Waukon High School is the Indians, and it has been suggested that a new name be chosen. In honor of Chief Waukon Decorah, Ho-Chunks has been suggested, which explains why Indians will likely continue.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.6 km² (2.9 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 4,131 people, 1,790 households, and 1,068 families residing in the city. The population density was 542.5/km² (1,404.3/mi²). There were 1,909 housing units at an average density of 250.7/km² (649.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.74% White, 0.10% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.73% of the population.

There were 1,790 households out of which 26.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.5% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.3% were non-families. 36.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.89.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 23.3% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 24.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 84.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $30,325, and the median income for a family was $41,068. Males had a median income of $27,532 versus $18,833 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,047. About 8.3% of families and 12.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.7% of those under age 18 and 6.8% of those age 65 or over.
