Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The show centred around the titular Watt; an extra terrestrial with, by human standards, an odd taste in food, and the ability to shapeshift (referred to in the series as transanimateobjectification). He came to Earth to flee his evil uncle: Watt was heir to the throne on his home planet, and his uncle had sent his top henchman Jemadah to follow and kill Watt. While Watt was over 300 years of age, he appeared to be a human in his early 20s.

Watt landed in the English town of Haxton, where he became friends with Sean Ruddock (played by Tom Brodie). Sean kept Watt's presence in the house a secret all through the series.

When they first meet, Watt is disguised as an apple with two stalks. Every episode features Watt transforming into a different inanimate object, each time with an error. Watt himself had upside down ears in the first series, and green ears in the second. The first series ended with Watt losing the ability to shapeshift, and in trying to regain the ability, he passed through each of the transformations in the previous eleven episodes.

Sean's parents were in charge of the local newspaper, The Haxton Weekly, and thought their son was odd. Sean's sister, Zoë, was suspicious of his behaviour, and came close to seeing Watt on many occasions. In the final episode of series 2, she finally worked out who Watt was, and turned him in to Jemadah.
