Waterloo Tunnel

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Waterloo Tunnel in Liverpool, England is a former railway tunnel, 862 metres long, which opened in 1849. At its western end was Waterloo Goods railway station, with the line continuing beyond this to Liverpool Riverside railway station and the dock railway system. The eastern end opens into a short cutting which connects to the Victoria Tunnel, which emerges at Edge Hill station. Both tunnels closed on 19 November 1972.

The tunnel passes beneath its Northern Line (Merseyrail) about a quarter of a mile North of the site of the former Liverpool Exchange railway station and encroached into the tunnel, this would require the lowering of the rail bed within the tunnel to provide full gauge access.
