WATMM (We Are The Music Makers) is an international electronic music community created and maintained by James E Thomas (Joyrex). The WATMM site is frequented by many electronic artists both signed and unsigned, providing peer review, technical articles and general discussions into contemporary electronic production. [edit] Overview

[edit] History

An initial fan site www.joyrex.com was available during the late part of 1999 which contained comprehensive information related to the major Rephlex/Warp artist Richard D James, commonly referred to as Aphex Twin. As www.joyrex.com was named after an alias of Richard D James it was seen appropriate to change the name of the site to avoid confusion.

WATMM was opened in May 2002 with the intention of providing information related to five major artists (Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Autechre, Boards Of Canada, μ-ziq) and also to provide a sounding board for many of the electronic music producers who frequented the site.

[edit] EKT

Expert Knob Twiddlers is a section on WATMM which deals with the progression of electronic music development, acting as a peer review forum for electronic artists. The success of this sub section of the main site has lead to the development of a WATMM music label, WATMM Records.

In early 2003, WATMM included a sub section devoted to releasing music in both CD and Vinyl format in limited quantities. The first release, We Are The Music Makers Volume 1 contains tracks by artists such as Cell, Chaosmachine, [Synthetrix][1] and The Flashbulb.

The second release on WATMM Records contains downloadable tracks from Autopilots by BeginningAlgebra.

[edit] Site Name Origins

The name WATMM is an abbreviation of the phrase We Are the Music Makers, a reference to the Aphex Twin track of the same name. That track in turn is named for its sampling of the phrase from the film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, which borrowed the line from the poem "Ode" by Arthur O'Shaughnessy. The same poem is used in Elgar's symphony "The Music Makers".
