Wasterzhi

An important god of the pagan religion of the Ossetians. Wasterzhi was the god of war and of the sun. He is frequently depicted as a cavalryman with a long beard, riding on a white horse. One of his cultic centers was a place called Hetag's Grove, a forest region near Vladikavkaz, the capital of North Ossetia.
With Christianization, Wastetzhi became identified with St. George. In recent years neo-pagan Wasterzhi cults have sprung up throughout Ossetia.
