Washington and Sunderland West will be a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It will elect one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.

Following their review of parliamentary representation in Tyne and Wear, the Boundary Commission for England has created this new constituency. Washington was formerly in Gateshead East and Washington West and Houghton and Washington East.

[edit] Boundaries

The new seat of Washington and Sunderland West is made up of the following electoral wards:

  • Castle, Redhill, St Anne’s, Washington Central, Washington East, Washington North, Washington South, Washington West

[edit] Election results

This seat will be fought for the first time at the UK general election of 2009 or 2010.

Media coverage in the region indicates that the seat will be keenly contested [1]. Candidates who have indicated they will seek selection include Gateshead East and Washington West MP Sharon Hodgson, Julie Elliott, Bridget Phillipson and Cllr Kathryn Rolph. Sharon Hodgson failed in her bid to secure selection for the new Gateshead seat, losing out to David Clelland MP.

As the Labour Party has decided that the selection process will be by All Women Shortlist, it is anticipated that Washington and Sunderland West be the only seat in the Tyne and Wear sub-region represented by a female Member of Parliament.
