The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom was a large political rally that took place on August 28, 1963. It was organized principally by A. Philip Randolph, Bayard Rustin and Martin Luther King Jr. During this March, King delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial. Between 200,000 and 500,000 people were in attendance. (read more...)

The United States Capitol is the capitol building, that serves as home for the United States Congress. The Capitol Building underwent expansion in the 1850s, under direction of architect Thomas U. Walter. The cast-iron dome, three times the height of the original dome, was added as part of the expansion. The dome is topped by the Statue of Freedom, a colossal statue that was added in 1863. The weight of the cast-iron for the dome has been published as 8,909,200 lb of iron (4,041,100 kg).
