From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Warren Sattler (born day unknown, 1934) was/is (still alive?) an American artist and cartoonist, who contributed work for many popular publications from the early 1960s through the 1990s, at times able to flawlessly imitate intricate details of anyone's style as well as developing his own unique drawing style.[citation needed] This ability to perfectly replicate any style came in handy for the many satire/spoof magazines of the day, such as Cracked and Playboy.

Sattler was born in 1934 in Meriden, Connecticut. He got his education at the Wilcox Technical School in Meriden, served in the United States Air Force from 1953 through 1957, and was a teacher at the Famous Artists School between 1957 and 1962. Then in the early 1960s, he assisted on the Barnaby daily comic strip, and later also on teenage-oriented The Jackson Twins strip. He also created his own feature, Grubby, which ran from 1964 to 1997 through the Al Smith Service. In 1980, he created another syndicated comic, the Swamp Brats Sunday page. During the 1980s and 1990s, he ghosted on such newspaper strips as Bringing Up Father and Comics for Kids.

In addition to his work for the newspapers, Sattler also worked for comic books, especially by Charlton Comics. He contributed to many of their 1970s horror, war and western titles, like Billy the Kid, Fightin' Army, Fightin' Marines, Ghost Manor, Ghostly Haunts, and Yang. He also did occasional work for DC Comics, Major Magazines (Cracked) and Marvel Comics. He additionally worked for magazines like National Lampoon and Playboy. Finally, he was illustrator for Great Moments in Hysteria (Ace Books, 1969).

Sattler is also an accomplished watercolor painter. He used this talent for some of the comic book covers he did such as Billy the Kid and Yang. Not many artists of that time were producing comic book covers done in watercolor paints.[citation needed]

Warren Sattler is also a composer of country-western songs since the late 1960s and is self-taugh on the acoustic guitar.
