[edit] History
Warrandyte High School was opened in 1978 with 42 students and moved into permanent buildings in 1987. When the Triennial Review in 1994 was completed, the school enrolment was 490. In 2000, it was 691 and in 2003 it is closer to 750 students. The school has grown quickly in a small period of time and currently attracts students from a wide range of feeder schools.
[edit] Location
Warrandyte is situated in the outer north-eastern suburbs of Melbourne and is only 30 minutes away from the Central Business District along the Eastern Freeway. Warrandyte is known as the place where the discovery of gold in Victoria was first registered. It was known as Anderson's Creek and the original primary school (Warrandyte Primary School) is State School no. 12.
The nearest major suburbs are Ringwood to the east and Eltham to the north. The catchment area for Warrandyte High School is extremely wide, with students coming from as far as Christmas Hills. National, Panorama and Invicta bus lines service the school.
[edit] Infrastructure
Over the past three years, there were a number of improvements to the school’s buildings and grounds. The outdoor sports complex (now the Michael J. Blake Sports Complex) was completed and officially opened by local celebrity Judy Green. The canteen has been extended and renovated to bring it into line with modern Health Department standards. The Federation Garden Project was completed with the planting of the Bush Tucker Garden and the addition of the project to the Warrandyte High School web site. The top driveway (the bus bay) was sealed, the gardens surrounding it landscaped and a new sign was erected on the corner of Alexander and Warrandyte Roads. New indigenous garden areas at the front of the school and between the portable classrooms were planted, as well as general planting around the school. The fish pond at the school entrance was drained and subsequently refurbished to create a frog friendly environment. Large shade sails were erected over the amphitheatre to provide a more sheltered area for students. Replacement of the aging and decaying sleepers and relaying of the paving in the amphitheatre has further enhanced this as a popular passive recreation area. Two new locker bays have been built to provide space for our expanding student population. The mezzanine floor in the staff room was enclosed to create an interview room. By shifting an external wall outwards, the ceramics classroom has been almost doubled in size. The Administration Block has been repainted and partially refurnished to make it more appealing and user friendly for our students, parents and school visitors. Other areas that have been brightened up by repainting include the Library, PE office, student toilets, and LOTE and Home Economics classrooms.
A Library extension/VCE study area (a project with a budget of $260,000) is currently under construction with the project being completed during 2004. In excess of $100,000 of locally raised funds has been committed to this project together with a grant of $85,000 through the Department of Education and Training and $77,000 from the ICT Modernization Project (computer pods). This project should considerably ease the pressure on our current library as well as provide a much needed VCE study space.
