War of the First Council

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The War of the First Council is an event in the Elder Scrolls series of video games; it comes up a number of times in games within the series. It occurred during the First Era and pitted Dunmer Houses Indoril, Redoran, Dres, Hlaalu, and Telvanni against Dunmer Houses Dwemer and Dagoth in an epic religious war. The First Council was the first governing body to take control of all Dunmer in the land of Morrowind. It collapsed during the course of the war and gave birth to the Tribunal who quickly banished the practices of the losing Dwemer and Dagoth houses.

[edit] The Houses

The Dwemer and Dagoth houses were both less numerous than that of the five houses they fought against, however they held the lead in technological superiority and were able to hold their own with the aid of Nords and Orcs who took to their side. House Dagoth was led by Dagoth Ur (Voryn Dagoth before his "rebirth") and the Dwemer were led by the brilliant scientist and engineer Kagrenac.

The Indoril, Redoran, Dres, Hlaalu, and Telvanni houses banded together in their superior numbers to stop the profane science experiments occurring under Red Mountain. Though not initially, General Nerevar was to lead the forces of the Dunmer against the Dwemer and Dagoth houses.

[edit] The War

The first part of the war did not bode well for the five houses. Disorganization and poor leadership caused defeat after defeat until the hero Nerevar was made general of all Dunmer forces. He was able to gather reinforcements from outlaying nomads known as Ashlanders and forced Dagoth and Dwemer houses to a battle at their stronghold of Red Mountain called the Battle of Red Mountain.

Outmanuvered thanks to the Ashlander scouts, Dagoth and Dwemer houses suffered a defeat that caused the remenants of their forces to take refuge in the Red Mountain facility. A short siege followed and because of an event of treason Nerevar broke into the Red Mountain facility. The entire leadership and members of House Dagoth and Dwemer were slain and Nerevar was mortally wounded.

It was assumed Nerevar died of his wounds, however new evidence suggest that the Tribunal murdered him because Nerevar was against using Lorkhan's Heart to turn themselves into gods, which the Tribunal did. This act of treachery gave birth to the Nerevarine prophecy.

[edit] Outcome

With the end of the war and the death of Nerevar; Vivec, Almalexia, and Sotha Sil, the surviving leaders of the five victorious houses, succeeded to control of the re-created First Council, re-named the Grand Council of Morrowind, and went on to become the god-kings and immortal rulers of Morrowind known as the Tribunal, or Almsivi.
